Gradual replacement of telecontrol networks with IEC 60870-5-101/-104 conversion
When an existing IEC 60870-5-101 telecontrol network needs modernising to IEC 60870-5-104, it usually means replacing the transmission technology too which consists for example of VFT modems in the voice band or multiplexer systems. The previous communications devices are then usually replaced by DSL transmission for copper wire, or optical communication via optical fibre.
The existing IEC 60870-5-101 telecontrol technology can't natively transmit via the new communications network and would therefore have to be exchanged. As this is only possible for all stations at once, it’s expensive, logistically complex and therefore involves long periods of down time. Devices in the HY104 series aren’t just state of the art in terms of modern Ethernet transmission via DSL and/or optical fibre, they also have converter functionality. The latter allows the existing telecontrol technology to remain in operation temporarily or permanently.
Due to the HY104 devices’ IEC 60870-5-101/-104 converter functionality, the communications network can be replaced while (in conjunction with an IEC 60870-5-104 control centre) communications are converted using the local telecontrol devices. At the same time, some of the previous transmission technology can be retained, for example when operating a multidrop VFT party line modem behind a converter.
